Some product that use generative AI display conflicting age ratings across different platforms and sources. These discrepancies make it difficult for caregivers and users to understand who the product is actually suitable for and can result in children accessing experiences not intended for them.
Example
An app may be rated 13+ in one store, 12+ in another, yet list 18+ in its own website or policy documents. Such inconsistencies mislead parents and allow young users to engage with adult conversations, sexualised avatars, or simulated relationships despite believing the app is safe for their age group.
Why It Matters
Age ratings are one of the few tools parents rely on when deciding whether a product is appropriate for their children. When ratings differ between platforms or contradict the actual content within a product, they erode public trust and expose minors to harmful or adult material. This issue is particularly concerning for products that use generative AI, which can produce unpredictable, explicit, or psychologically manipulative content. Without consistent standards and transparent disclosures, children can easily access experiences meant for adults, while caregivers and educators have no reliable guidance.
What We Are Calling For
The AISF is calling for products with generative AI to:
Ensure publicly displayed age requirements match the highest age-restricted content or feature within the product.
Apply consistent minimum age ratings wherever adult confirmation or restricted experiences are requested.
Maintain alignment across all product information and listings so declared age requirements are transparent, consistent, and genuinely protective of younger.
